Lets have a look at the New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40 Wood Lathe. I am careful to keep you up to date on the best lathes on the market today at the best price possible.  I also keep a lookout for the safest, most reliable, and durable wood working tools available. With this in mind I also have to bring you candid reviews on lathes that customers have determined to be poor quality machines. This lathe falls into that sub-par category.

The first thing to keep in mind is most lathes are usually made of heavy cast iron frames and generally weigh well over 100 pounds. And even at that weight category they are usually classified as mini lathes. The New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe is a mere 66 pounds and the only cast iron components are the headstock, tailstock, foot, tool rest and tool rest base. The bed of the 4 Speed 1000MM is made of steel tubing.

  • Construction – Headstock, tailstock, foot, tool rest base and tool rest of heavy cast iron. Bed is of heavy steel tubing.

To me the steel tubing construction is a major concern because the 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe has a motor that is putting out a spindle speed of 1100 RPM’s right from the onset and goes as high as 3400 RPM’s. Even though the manufacture tried to do right by the 4 speed V belt pulley system, what they may have missed is this. According to reviews we found you could potentially run into trouble when initially roughing out a piece.

Here’s why. At 1100 RPM’s on a bed that is made of steel tubing you are turning your rough piece way too fast for a lightweight unit and you could wind up having your machine subject to heavy and unstable vibration. Even when it is bolted down the lathe’s steel tubing construction appears to be way too light. Most lathes are built out of heavy cast iron for a reason. This reduces the possibility of vibration, helps keep the lathe together, and provides a solid working environment.

New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe Reviews

Customer service is just as important as product quality, and one often reflects the other. One reviewer we found said he purchased this lathe from the manufacture and it was missing the instruction manual and tailstock. He said they were supposed to send him the parts but after 12 days of waiting his missing parts still hadn’t arrived.

A second reviewer said that after a few weeks of trying to work with the New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe, he was returning it. He said it bends when you tighten the wood stock and creates a very dangerous situation because it is off balance. He felt the lathe puts the user at risk and was also unhappy that he couldn’t use it for pen turning and other things that require a mandrel.

Another reviewer said he bolted this lathe down to his table and it handled pretty well but he had to go very slowly with shallow cuts. He also said he had a really hard time finding attachments and really couldn’t recommend the New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM.

Yet another reviewer said his lathe is currently broken. He said The New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe is too light to handle something even half its maximum motor capacities. He went on to say that even at this price it’s not worth it unless you are going to use it for sanding something that has already been turned and well balanced.

Woodturning is something that is fun and enjoyable but working with power equipment of any kind should always be taken seriously. So have fun and enjoy your woodturning, but please be careful and make sure you properly size your lathe to the kind of projects you expect it to handle. It is obvious that we simply cannot recommend the New Industrial 4 Speed 1000MM 40″ Wood Lathe based on the poor customer feedback we found.
